Six NYIT students traveled to Syracuse, N.Y., from Oct. 11 to 13 to attend the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) Northeast Regional Conference. They were accompanied by Mehtap Donuk, director of student activities and leadership development at NYIT-Old Westbury, and APCA Northeast regional coordinator. APCA has been around since 1994 helping college students across America with their programming needs.
Students included Greek Life Council e-board members Jatinder Saini, Prattasha Paul, Bernadette Connell, Brian Church, and Pooja Berdia as well as Navpreet Sachdev, president of the NYIT-Old Westbury Campus Programing Board and student delegate for the APCA Northeast region. They were nominated and elected to be national interns for the conference and assisted with registration, announcing national speakers, running icebreakers, and leading roundtable discussions. Brian Church, who works as a student employee in NYIT's Academic Computing Lab, was also asked to work with the conference's professional stage management staff members, who were so impressed with his contributions that they offered him a job on the spot to travel the country with them in summer 2014.
During the conference, students listened to presentations by expert speakers and student affair mentors, attended talent showcases, and networked with vendors. "I was given the opportunity to learn from poets, artists, comedians, and professional speakers about myself and more importantly about the world," said Berdia.
In addition, they chose different educational sessions to attend such as overcoming adversity, Greek life roundtable, facilitating great discussions from activity to learning, and making any space a programming space.
"For us as student leaders to engage our campus, we need to have the right attitude and a lot of desire to make change," said Sachdev. "We have to take charge and set out to achieve our goals. We can't just hand out fliers and expect students to go to an event. It takes a lot more, and it starts with creating bonds with the people on campus."
Donuk added, "I'm a proud advisor because our students shine everywhere they go and have so much school pride!"

Erik Cabrera (first year, Computer Science major) was excited to receive his prize on Monday, April 22, after being randomly selected as the winner of an iPad Mini upon completing the Old Westbury 2013 SGA Student Life Satisfaction Survey.
Student Government Association President, Robert Hammarberg, put together a student satisfaction survey to gather feedback about improvements that could be made on the Old Westbury campus. The survey was comprised of 32 questions discussing topics ranging from on assessing student pride, SGA satisfaction, event participation and faculty connectivity. It was sent out to all 3,443 students of NYIT-Old Westbury and open for a period of two weeks. 777 students responded by the time the survey closed.
Students who participated in the survey had the option of entering themselves in a drawing to win a brand new iPad. Erik Cabrera was randomly selected as the winner. When Erik came to retrieve his prize, he stated how he was happy to take part in the survey. There is a hefty amount of data and comments to analyze, which President Hammarberg has already begun to do and will prepare for the next SGA President to take on. He looks forward to seeing the changes suggested by student participants over the next come to life. President Hammarberg would like to thank everyone who participated in the survey and encourages everyone to look out for next year’s spring survey!

NYIT Bear Communities (BC) are housing options for returning residential students who wish to build community and live with each other while exploring a theme, common interest, and/ or passion. Residents in a BC area apply to be part of these unique communities and are offered special programs and opportunities to teach others about their interests, strengths, and passions.
BCs are a great opportunity for students to gain leadership skills, share their knowledge with others, and live with people who hold similar values. NYIT Bear Communities are different from other residential communities and halls because they allow students to further explore topics and causes important to them. NYIT Bear Communities will offer special related programs, and opportunities, which distinguish these communities from other housing.
NYIT Bear Communities are for returning students who elect to live in these suites who MUST apply as a full suite of six residents. These suites will pledge that they will participate in and sponsor semester programs consistent with their identified cause. With oversight and advising of from designated and committed Housing & Residential Staff, this living community will partner with a faculty or staff person in order to meet their semester goal of engaging with their identified cause. This may include coordinating the budget, training, potential travel off-campus, conversations, and commitment to interpersonal communication, and learning outcomes. This year's themes are up to you. So please be creative and realistic in your proposal:
How do I come up with a theme?
You and your desired suite mates must chose a themed purpose. The themed purpose can be a theme that is based around a common interest or major. Themes such as sustainability, community service, civility, wellness, arts and religion are just a few to be named. Each BC must develop an educational purpose - what you are hoping to learn from the experience or how you plan to enhance your education by living in an BC. This is your mission statement of sorts. Your purpose should be a short, broad statement that explains what the theme of the BC will be and what you hope to achieve through the BC program.
For example, if the BC theme is Pre-professional students, your purpose may be as follows: The purpose of the Pre-professional suite is to provide a support network for students living in the halls which will help us achieve our academic goals, explore and apply for professional degree programs upon graduation from NYIT, and network in our respective fields.
What types of themes can my group use?
The possibilities for different themes are endless. Examples include but not limited to) sustainability, religious groups, musical theater, different languages, student organizations, diversity, computer science, and much more!

As our academic year draws closer to its conclusion, the time has come to begin focusing on next year’s housing assignments. As a current student residing on the SUNY Old Westbury campus within the NYIT Residential complex, you are allowed to participate in the initial room lottery selection process for the 2012 - 2013 academic year.
The following items must be completed by Thursday, April 18, 2013 in order to receive a lottery number:
Priority room selection concludes on Friday, April 26. After this date, all returning unassigned students will be housed on a first received basis of completed applications beginning July 2013, or sooner. Remaining room assignments will be made on the basis of availability. Current residence hall students are guaranteed an assignment only if the required information is received in the Office of Housing and Residential Life by June 1, 2013.

Residents who fail to complete the form by stated date/time will incur a late application fee of $25 (charged to their NYIT account).
NYIT Spring Break begins Friday, March 15 at 6 p.m. and ends Sunday, March 24 at noon.
Please note, there will be limited shuttle bus service between SUNY and NYIT during the Spring Break. Regular bus service to NYIT will resume on Monday, March 25 at 7 a.m.
Food Service will be limited during the Spring Break.
