Bears Edged 1-0 by Highlanders
Old Westbury, NY (March 28, 2010) – The Yale Bulldogs rallied from a 10-1 deficit in Sunday afternoons non-conference bout to defeat NYIT 13-10. Home runs and relief pitching were the story for the Bulldogs as they went deep six times and pitched five shutout innings to closeout the game. The loss drops the Bears to 4-9 on the season.
Offense wasn’t the issue for the Bears early on as they jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning, where they scored seven runs. Junior Effrey Valdez (Queens, NY) broke the 1-1 tie with a two-run homer to right field. Then two-run singles by both sophomore Sebastian Grazziani (Whitestone, NY) and sophomore Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, NY) gave the Bears a comfortable lead.
The Bears scored two more in the bottom of the fourth but this was not enough as Yale began mounting their comeback the next inning with a six-run frame. Trygg Larsson-Danforth cut the deficit to 8-4 with a three run homer. Two batters later, Ryan Brenner drove his second solo shot of the day over the left field fence.
The Bulldogs belted three homers in the eight inning. A three-run shot by Andy Megee gave Yale their first lead, and Larsson-Danforth and Brenner. This was all they needed as relief pitcher Vinny Lally was more than impressive, throwing six shutout innings and striking out seven Bears batters.
The Bears outhit the Bulldogs 19 to 13 but stranded 12 runners. Grazziani was a perfect 5 for 5 on the day, driving in three runs. Brian Smith provided a solid contribution to the Bears offense, going 4 for 6 with two runs scored.
Ryan Brenner finished 3 for 4 with three solo home runs. Trygg Larsson-Danforth also pitched in with two homers and five RBI.
The Bears return to action on Friday, April 2 when they travel to Western Carolina University for a three-game series.
