Women's Basketball Fell short to C.W. Post 75-68

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2012) – NYIT women’s basketball fell short to C.W. Post 75-68 Wednesday night in East Coast Conference action. Despite four Bears scoring in double figures, NYIT lost a hard fought game in the “Battle of the Boulevard.” With the loss, NYIT’s overall record is 13-8 and 6-3 in conference play.

Junior Chloe Johnson (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) and senior Nikki Jo Rotolo (Rome, N.Y.) lead NYIT in scoring with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Junior Sabrinna Moore (Flushing, N.Y) also chipped in with a strong 12 point performance and team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Demitra Apergis (Littleton, Colo.) delivered 15 points and dished out four assist on the night.

NYIT jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after made baskets from Rotolo, Johnson and Apergis. However, C.W. Post regrouped and stormed back to take the lead 10-7 with 14:17 left in the half. After that the teams traded baskets back and forth until the 10 minute mark when the home team rallied to earn a small four point lead 24-20, with five minutes left in the half.

C.W. Post looked to extend its lead but, thanks to one of Johnson’s five three pointers, the game was tied at 32-32 with 1:05 left in the half. The score remained that way as both teams headed to the locker room.
The lead changed four times in the first half and the home team managed to outscore NYIT’s bench 18-0.

The second half was very similar to the first half as the teams were battling back and forth and exchanged baskets. With three minutes left in the game, NYIT took a 61-60 lead after a made Apergis free throw.
Yet, with 54 seconds left of the game C.W. Post once again generated a small run and claimed another four-point lead after a misfortunate turnover by the Bears. The Pioneers were making their free throws as NYIT was forced to foul at the end of the game and the final score was 75-68.

NYIT women’s basketball returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to take on Mercy College at 3 p.m.
