FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2011) - Three players scored in double-figures but it was not enough as NYIT women's basketball fell 78-74 at Queens College Saturday night in East Coast Conference action. The Bears (4-10, 2-7 ECC) were paced by senior Alexis Tyson (North Babylon, N.Y.), who posted 24 points, seven rebounds and grabbed four steals.
Junior Cierra Baker (Windsor, Conn.) added 19 points and also grabbed seven boards, while sophomore Rebecca Lynch (Hillsdale, N.J.) tallied 16 points in the outing. For the Knights (5-10, 4-4 ECC), Chloe Johnson registered a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds. Amanda Bartlett was also in double-digits with 15 points. The scoring was even between the two teams. NYIT shot 41.5% from the field compared to Queens' 43.3%. The discrepency was about the same from the charity stripe as the Bears shot 83.3% to the Knights 81.8%.
Lynch opened the contest for the Bears with jumper at 19:47 and baskets from Tyson and Baker pushed NYIT to a 5-0 lead less than a minute later. Queens' Bartlett interrupted the run with a three-pointer that put the Knights on the scoreboard at 17:49. The Knights then tied the game, 7-7, off a jumper from Johnson. Yet, NYIT regained controll with back-to-back deuces from Tyson, 11-7.
Queens then rallied with a 13-0 run to claim a 19-11 advantage with 12:11 left to play. The run was sparked by a free throw from Bartlett after NYIT's bench was issued a technical foul and included three trey's from Bartlett, Johnson and Jessica Fairweather. The Knights pushed their lead to 30-18 on a jumper from Barlett with 7:27 on the clock. NYIT did not back down and held Queens scoreless for five and a half minutes, while it tacked on 12 straight points to knot the score 30-30 with 2:05 remaining. The rally began with a jumper from freshman Keyla Pullen (Richmond, Va.) and was fueled by three straight baskets from Tyson, a second chance layup from Lynch and layup from Baker. The Bears would end up trailing by one-point going into the second half, 34-33.
The Knights came out firing in the second half as Johnson tallied seven points in the opening two minutes. A wide open layup from Caitlin Hopkins then gave Queens a 43-35 lead. With about 12 minutes to play, Tyson dropped a free throw and stole the ball to nail a fastbreak layup to give NYIT some momentum. A jumper from senior Denise Crawford (Roosevelt, N.Y.) and a three-pointer from sophomore Thalia Jimenez (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) brought the Bears within two points, 55-53, with 10:53 to play. However, it would take another five minutes before NYIT would be able to gain the upper hand. The Bears fought back with baskets from rookie Demitra Apergis (Littleton, Colo.), Tyson and Lynch, but it was a layup from Baker that gave NYIT a 68-67 edge with 5:16 remaining in regulation.
The two teams kept the score tight in the final five minutes with both teams holding mini leads. The Bears claimed a 74-73 edge off a free throws and a layup from Baker with 1:15 left. But a layup from Chu would give the Knights final control of the scoreboard. Queens went on to win 78-74.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 against neighboring rival Pioneers of C.W. Post. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. at Recreation Hall.
