Women's Basketball Defeats C.W. Post 62-49
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2011) – Sophomore Rebecca Lynch (Hillsdale, N.J.) posted a game-high 19 points as NYIT women’s basketball defeated C.W. Post 62-49 Wednesday night in East Coast Conference action. With the win, the season series is now split one game a piece.

"This is a great win for our young program," said head coach Anthony Crocitto. "C.W. Post is a talented, athletic and well-coached program. A fantastic effort was put in by  Rebecca Lynch. She was the glue that held us together tonight. While Cierra [Baker] and Alexis [Tyson] had tough nights, Demitra [Apergis] and Lynch really stepped up. As a coach, I am proud of everyone from our rookies to our veteran players."

Freshman Demitra Apergis (Littleton, Colo.) added 13 points for the Bears, who improved to 5-10 on the season and 3-7 in the ECC. Off the glass, junior Cierra Baker (Windsor, Conn.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Although shooting from the field was fairly equal between the two teams (38% to 32%), NYIT dominated behind the arc as it shot 38.5% to C.W. Post’s 12.5%.

After the score was tied three times in the opening minutes of play, NYIT compiled an 11-1 run that pushed its lead to 11 points, 26-15. The rally began with a deuce from senior Alexis Tyson (North Babylon, N.Y.) and culminated on a layup from junior Tiffany Seymour (Amityville, N.Y), who made her first appearance this season after recovering from injury. The Bears continued to control the scoreboard and led by 18 points heading into the break, 36-18.

NYIT claimed its largest lead of the contest, 40-18, on three straight second half opening layups from Lynch. However, a second half surge from the Pioneers brought the game within six points, 49-43, with 6:55 remaining. Yet, that was the closest C.W. Post would get as NYIT would compile a 10-2 run to regain an a 14-point advantage, 57-43, with 3:32 remaining. The Bears won 62-49 after a free shot by senior Sarah Vivonetto (Manorville, N.Y.).

For the Pioneers, Felicia Joyner registered 17 points, while Alyssa Lombardi tallied 11 rebounds.

NYIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 22 on the road against at Bridgeport. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Bridgeport, Conn.
