Old Westbury, NY- (April 9, 2010) – Junior Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Canada) pitched a gem, allowing just two earned runs on six hits in eight innings of work to lead the NYIT baseball team past Chicago State University 4-2 this afternoon in both teams Great West Conference opener. Senior Mike Roth (Rockville Centre, NY) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the season as the Bears improved to 7-12 overall and 1-0 in the league. The loss drops the Cougars to 1-19 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
Wasmund and Chicago State University starter Albert Carpen put zeros up on the scoreboard through the first four innings, but the Bears finally broke through in the fifth inning, scoring a single run. Sophomore Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, NY) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on senior Greg Gilroy’s (Nesconset, NY) sacrifice bunt. Campbell came around to score and gave NYIT the 1-0 lead on sophomore Matthew Carr’s (Westbury, NY) double to left center.
The Bears tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a 3-1 lead. Senior Brian Smith (Nesconset, NY) led off with a double and was driven home on junior Effrey Valdez’s (Flushing, NY) double to deep center field. Valdez moved to third on a groundout and came around to score on junior Jerrry Smith’s (Nesconset, NY) sacrifice fly.
The Bears made it a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when Gilroy came home on freshman Ali Rodriguez’s (Yorktwon, Va.) infield single.
The Cougars finally broke through on Wasmund in the top of the eighth, cutting the deficit in half with one swing of the bat on Miguel Camacho’s two run homer to left field. Wasmund retired the next two batters to get out of the inning with the 4-2 lead and Roth struck out two batters in the ninth to earn the his fourth save of the season.
Wasmund walked one and struck out two batters as he improved to 3-0 on the season. Valdez led the Bears going 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
NYIT and Chicago State continue their four game series with a double header tomorrow. First pitch for the seven inning contest is slated for Noon.
