Valdez Named GWC Player of the Year

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (May 23, 2011) – Senior infielder Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) was recognized as the league’s top player Monday night as the Great West Conference named him Player of the Year at the pre-tournament banquet held at the Ralph Engelstad Arena on the campus of University of North Dakota.

Valdez, a senior from Flushing, N.Y., also earned first team all-conference accolades as he leads the GWC and is second in the nation in batting average with a .438 clip. The first baseman also leads the league in conference-only games with a .500 batting average and 11 home runs.
 
Joining Valdez on the All-GWC first team was sophomore RHP Ryan Dillabough (Whitby, Ontario, Canada). Dillabough is fourth in the conference with a 4.31 ERA and leads with five saves.
 
Earning second team all-conference accolades were senior outfielder Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) and freshman infielder Rob Cafiero (Bethpage, N.Y.). In conference-only games, Cafiero is fifth with a .451 batting average and Smith rounds out the top-10 with a .407 clip.
 
The Bears open play in 2011 GWC Baseball Tournament on Tuesday, May 24 against the Highlanders of NJIT. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Kraft Field in Grand Forks, N.D.
