SPARKHILL, N.Y. (Apr.14, 2011) – NYIT Softball lost both games of a doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday afternoon.
Despite a late come from behind effort by the Bears in game one STAC was able to pull out the victory in the bottom of the seventh with a walk off double. Game two was all about the Spartans Maura Power. Powers threw a complete game one hit shutout in the 2-0 victory to complete the sweep.
For the Bears, Freshman Maura Cien-Mayer (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Junior Natasha Milosevich (Torrance, Calif.) each recorded two hits and two RBI in game one of the doubleheader. Milosevich started on the mound for game two of the doubleheader and threw a complete game allowing only two runs.
NYIT dropped to 4-21 overall and 1-11 in ECC play, while STAC improved to 11-15 and 6-8 in the conference.
Game 1 –STAC 9, NYIT 8
Game one was an offensive affair with both teams going back and forth. The Bears came from three runs behind in the sixth inning to tie the game up at 8-8. But the Spartans were able to score in the bottom of the seventh for the walk off win.
Heading into the sixth inning with the Spartans leading 8-5 the Bears came fighting back. Milosevich supplied the big hit with a double that drove in two runs to cut the lead to one. An error on the catcher allowed Milosevich to score two plays later to tie the game up 8-8.
However in the bottom of the seventh with the score still tied the Spartans rallied. Joy Ferriello lead off with a double and was followed by ToniAnn Groth who drove in Ferriello with a double herself for the 9-8 victory.
Meagan Sweezy earned the win for the Spartans going the distance in this offensive affair. Junior Jackie Enlund (Rocky Point, N.Y.) pitched a complete game in a losing effort for the Bears.
Game 2 –STAC 2, NYIT 0
Game two was all about the Spartans Maura Power. Powers was dominant in the 2-0 win for STAC.
The Bears got their lone hit of the game from Senior Martha Redondo, She led off the game a single. After that NYIT was only able to get one other base runner the rest of the game.
Milosevich started for the Bears and pitched a solid game. She allowed only two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in the game.
The Spartans got all the offense they needed in the third inning when Meagan Sweezy hit a solo homerun. They added a security run in the fifth inning off of an RBI single from Heather Clausen.
Meagan Powers threw a complete game one hitter with five strikeouts to earn her seventh win of the year.
On Deck
NYIT will play next on Friday, Apr. 15 against Dowling in Brookhaven. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
