Old Westbury, N.Y. (March 27, 2010) - The NYIT Softball team swept visiting UMass-Lowell, 5-1 and 11-5 this afternoon in non-conference action. With the sweep NYIT improves to 9-10 over all, while UMass falls to 6-10 overall. Sophomore pitcher Jamie Brooker (Callahan, Fla.) pitched six innings and struck out eight batters in the game one victory. Sophomore Nicole Constantatos went three-for-four, driving in 4 runs and scored twice in game two victory for the Bears
The Bears scored the games first run in the bottom of the fifth when Nicole Constantaots (East Northport, N.Y.) knocked a double into right field. Senior Lisa Boystak (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored the bears second on a miscue by the RiverHawks. Junior Patricia Memale (Oro Valley, AZ.) followed with a triple down the right field line to score two runs and give NYIT a commanding 4-0 lead. Senior Rebecca Stein (Bay Shore, N.Y.) capped off the inning, hitting a single to score Memale and give the Bears a 5-0 lead.
The River Hawks were able to generate one run n the top of the seventh, before sophomore relief pitcher Michael Raap (Hammonton, N.J.) settled down and closed the game out for the Bears. Memale went two-for-three with two RBI and scored one run in the win.
Game Two
Megan Hebert gave the River Hawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as she led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
UMass-Lowell took advantage of some fielding miscues by the Bears in the second and scored four to increase their advantage to 5-0. In the second half of the inning the Bears came back when senior Rebecca Stein hit a sacrifice fly to score NYIT's first run. Sophomore Martha Redondo singled up the middle scoring Constantatos, cutting down the RiverHawks lead to 5-2.
NYIT broke the game open in the third inning with seven runs, highlighted by two, two RBI doubles by Constattatos and Memale. After going through the batting line up the Bears took a 9-5 lead. The Bears tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth inning and cruised to the 11-5 win.
The Softball team returns to action on Tuesday March 30, when they travel to Dowling College for a 2:30 p.m. start.
