Old Westbury, N.Y. (April 27, 2010) – NYIT junior Patricia Memale (Oro Valley, Az.) went a combine 4-6 with six RBI, three runs scored, two homeruns and a double to lead the softball team to a double header sweep of Bridgeport this afternoon in East Coast Conference action. The win improves the Bears to 26-21 on the season and 14-10 in the ECC.
In the opener, Memale homered twice in the bottom of the first inning and the Bears batted around the lineup, scoring nine runs on seven hits. Memale's first home run of the inning gave the Bears a 2-0 lead, senior Lisa Boystak (Lindenhurst, NY) drove in two more with a double to centerfield, and junior Brigette Kirschmer's (Aurora, CO.) double gave the Bears a 6-0 lead. Junior Martha Redondo (Tuscon, Az.) increased NYIT's lead to 7-0 with a double and Memale's second homerun of the inning, a two run shot to left center, gave NYIT a 9-0 lead.
In the second inning junior Nicole Constantatos (East Northport, NY) solo shot to left field made the score 10-0 and Redondo's second double of the game increased the Bears advantage to 11-0.
Sophomore Jamie Brooker (Callahan, Fla.) improved to 20-17 on the season as she allowed just one hit over four innings of work with three strikeouts.
Memale opened the scoring in the night cap as well, singling to right field to score Hernandez and the Bears would go on to score seven runs in the first. Three batters later Constantatos followed with a two run double to increase the Bears lead to 3-0. Senior Rebecca Stein and Redondo each had two-RBI hits in the inning to give the Bears the 7-0 lead.
After Bridgeport pushed one across in the top of the second, Constantatos belted her second homerun of the day, a solo shot in the bottom half of the frame to increase NYIT's lead to 8-1.
Sophomore Michelle Rapp (Hammonton, NJ) allowed one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work and improved to 3-1 on the season.
The Bears return to action on Friday as they travel to Philadelphia University for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
