BROOKVHAVEN, N.Y. (May 6, 2010) – Aided by a five-run seventh inning, the fourth-seeded New York Technological Institute Bears dealt a 9-2 loss to top-seeded C.W. Post in the first round of the East Coast Conference Softball Championships Thursday afternoon at host Dowling’s Golden Lion Field.
NYIT improves to 33-21 while C.W. Post slips to 40-13 overall.
Senior third baseman Brooklynn Fields (Aurora, Colo.) started the Bears off in the top of the first, as she belted her 14th homerun of the season, a two-run shot to centerfield.
NYIT built a 4-0 lead two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. The first came on an infield fielding error and senior centerfielder Anna Hernandez (Tuscon, Ariz.) followed with an RBI single.
The Pioneers cut the lead in half with the two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, beginning with an RBI single from senior centerfielder Melissa Medina (Levittown, N.Y.) that scored senior right fielder Katie Fisher (Barto, Pa.) from third. The second run was scored on the same play when Medina teased the infield, running between first and second before safely reaching second and allowing freshman catcher Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) to score from third.
The Bears put the game out of reach in the seventh as they pounded out five runs on four hits, including a two-run double from senior catcher Lisa Boystak (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).
Fields led the Bears offensively, batting 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Jamie Brooker (Callahan, Fla.) got the win in the circle and kept the Pioneers to two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five.
The Bears advance to take on third seeded Molloy, who defeated second seeded Dowling earlier in the day, on Friday at Noon.
