Old Westbury, N.Y. (March 21, 2010) – The NYIT softball team swept the St. Anselm Hawks in a double header this afternoon in non-conference play, wining game one by the score of 11-10, and game two by the score of 16-4. With the two victories NYIT improves to 6-6 overall, while St. Anselm falls to 7-5 on the season. Senior Lisa Boystak (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) went a combined 5-for-6 with two homeruns, one double, and five RBI in the two games.
Game 1:
In the top of the first, St. Anselm jumped out to a quick lead on a two run homerun, but the Bears came back in the bottom half of the inning, as Boystak drove in pinch runner Rebecca Stein (Bay Shore, N.Y.) with a single. During the next at-bat Boystak got caught in a rundown between first and second, and senior Brooklynn Fields (Aurora, Co.) stole home to tie the game 2-2.
In the second inning St. Anselm’s Moira Mcabe hit a double into deep left field driving in two runs to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead. In the bottom half of the innign, NYIT junior Brigette Kirschmer (Aurora, Co.) smashed a homerun to left field to cut the Hawks lead to 4-3.The Hawks regained their two run lead in the fourth inning via a solo homerun, but the Bears came right back once again, tying the game 5-5 thanks to a Boystak two run homerun into deep centerfield.
The Bears broke the game wide open in the bottom portion of the sixth inning by scoring six runs. Sophomore Jamie Brooker (Callahan, Fla.) and Boystak each drove in runs with singles and the highlight of the inning came when senior Martha Redondo (Tucson, Az.) smashed a double to deep right center that scored three runs and gave NYIT an 11-5 lead.
In the top half of the sixth, St. Anselm would get a run back with an RBI single from Raylyn Glavin to pull to within 11-6 and the Hawks would score four time in the top of the sevent to make the score 11-10. NYIT starter, junior pitcher Nicole Constatatos (East Northport, N.Y.), was able to stop the bleeding and close out the game to earn her second win of the season.
Game 2:
The NYIT offense exploded in the second inning, scoring 14 runs which included some helpful miscues from St. Anselm. Boystak started the inning of with a leadoff homerun to deep centerfield and Kirschmer singled to drive in two runs.
During the top half of the third inning, the Hawks got on the board with a solo homer. NYIT countered with two runs on a Patricia Memale (Oro Valley, Az.) sacrifice fly and a single by Destiny Ocasio (Floral Park, N.Y.) to right center that scored junior Josiane Vileneuve (St.-Basile, Canada).
After three innings of play, NYIT led the Hawks 16-1 and even though St. Anselm scored twice in the fourth inning, it wasn’t enough to avoid the mercy rule and the game ended in five innings.
Krischmer went 4-for-6 with a homerun and three RBI in the double header and Fields scored four runs.
The softball team returns to action on March 23 when they travel to face Caldwell College for a 2:30 p.m. start.
