Brookville, NY (May 7, 2010) - The NYIT softball team came within three outs of advancing to their second consecutive East Coast Conference softball tournament championship game, but Molloy College rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat NYIT 6-5 this afternoon. The Bears then faced Dowling in the losers bracket elimination game and were defeated by the Golden Lions 8-0. The Bears finish the season with a 33-23 record and will have to wait and see if they recieve a bid to the NCAA Northeast Regional. The brackets will be announced on Monday morning at 10 a.m.
The Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning of their game with Molloy as senior Ana Hernandez (Tuscon, Az.) drove in a run with an RBI single. Molloy tied the game on a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but NYIT senior Lisa Boystak (Lindenhurst, NY) gave the Bears a 4-1 lead with a three run homerun in the top of the sixth. After Molloy scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, Petricia Memale's RBI sacrifice fly increased the Bears lead to 5-3, but Molloy would load the bases in the bottom half of the frame. An error allowed the first run to score and Alexandra Sydor delivered the game winning hit, a two run single to lift the Lions to victory.
Dowling scored five times in the third inning and three more in the fourth in their victory over NYIT. Stephanie Tarango belted two humeruns and drove in five for the Golden Lions, who advance to play Molloy in the championship game tomorrow.
