Red Storm Blanks Bears 15-0
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 10, 2011) – NYIT baseball faced a tough 15-0 shutout on the road against long-time rival St. John’s Tuesday afternoon. The Bears dropped to 12-27 on the season with the loss, while the Red Storm improved to 27-17 overall.

With his first at-bat of the game, senior Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) became just the fifth Bear in NYIT history to play in a career 200 games. His twin brother, Brian, broke the school record with a career 211 from 2007-2010. Jerry is now tied for third with Ray Giannelli (1985-1988) and Jelani Arnold (2001-2004).

The Bears were held scoreless for the full nine and were only able to scatter three hits. The first came in the third inning when junior Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, N.Y.) singled through the right side. He then stole second before senior Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) was dealt a walk. The two advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch but were left stranded after a strike out and ground out.

Sophomore Ali Rodriguez (Yorktown, Va.) had NYIT’s second hit, and infield single to the short stop that he beat to the bag. The designated hitter then advanced to second on a wild pitch but could not be plated.

The Red Storm quickly got on the scoreboard with a three runs in the first inning. St. John’s added a fourth run in the third and then rallied for four in the fourth to pull away 8-0.

NYIT had another opportunity to score in the seventh as Rodriguez reached on an error by St. John’s second baseman and then advanced to third on a two-out single up the middle from Campbell. However, Valdez grounded out to end the top half.

STJ continued to dominate at the plate with six runs in the seventh and then another in the eighth for the final score 15-0. NYIT had a final chance to end the shutout in the ninth but were unable to get another runner on.

Sophomore Steve Cotov (Ozone Park, N.Y.) was dealt the loss after 3.1 innings, where he surrendered eight runs on eight hits and struck out four. Nick Arevalo (Westbury, N.Y.), Jose Checo (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), and Brennen Forster (Dix Hills, N.Y.) closed out the game for the Bears. The win went to Anthony Cervone (2-1), who tossed five scoreless innings surrendering just one hit and striking out five.

NYIT returns to action on Friday, May 13 when it hosts UT-Pan American in Great West Conference action. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at President’s Field.
