OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2012) - Despite double-digit performances from Demitra Apergis (Littleton, Colo.) and Rebecca Lynch (Hillsdale, N.J.), the NYIT women's basketball team faced a hard-fought 75-53 loss to Dowling at Recreation Hall Saturday afternoon.
Apergis led the Bears (9-6, 3-2 ECC) with 12 points and a game-high three steals. Lynch added 11 points. For the Golden Lions, Sarah Schicher had a game-high 18 points and Connie Simmons posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
After battling to a 30-30 stalemate in the first half, Dowling quickly jumped to an 11 point lead 45-34 with a 15-3 run to open the second half. The Golden Lions continued to hold a double-figure edge over the Bears in the second half and claimed their largest lead of 22 points, 73-51, with a three-pointer by Hannah Krueger with 1:27 to play.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 on the road against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Sparkill, N.Y.
