EDINBURG, Texas - NYIT run-ruled Northern Colorado in eight innings by the score of 11-1 on Friday afternoon at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Bears both teams now will have to wait and see who will advance to the Great West Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon.
If Texas-Pan American is victorious over NJIT on Friday night, Northern Colorado advances to the championship due to three teams being 2-1 in pool play and NC being the highest seed. If NJIT defeats UTPA, NYIT moves to the finals with their win over NC.
NYIT starter, senior Frank Ryan (3-3) kept the Northern Colorado bats at bay by scattering six hits in 7.2 innings of work. Junior Effrey Valdez and freshman Ali Rodriguez each had three hits to spark NYIT's offense.
The Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Valdez capped the big inning as he drove in two runs with a single to left field. NYIT tacked on single runs in the fourth and seventh innings and led 7-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Thats when the Bears got an RBI double from Rodriguez, an RBI on a ball from Jerry Smith and a two RBI doubel from senior Christian Dienna that gave NYIT the 11-1 lead and ended the game after eight innings of play.
Ryan came within one out of recording a complete game. He was relieved by senior Louie Bernardi, who retired the only batter he faced in the top of the eight inning.
NC's left-hander Mark Shannon pitched seven innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. Just two of the runs were earned for NYIT as the defense committed three errors behind him. Shannon also walked one and struck out three.
NYIT scored four in the bottom of the eighth to win by the run rule, 11-1.
