CHICAGO, Ill. (Apr. 15, 2011) - Senior Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice bunt from senior Eric Cos (Coral Gables, Fla.) as NYIT baseball defeated Chicago State 5-1 in Great West Conference action. With the win the Bears improved to 7-17 on the season and 3-2 in GWC action.
NYIT exploded for four runs in the sixth inning. After a pitcher's duel, Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line and then scored on a Valdez single. Senior Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) then singled through the left side to advance Valdez to third. With Cos' sac bunt, Valdez was plated and put Smith on second. Smith then scored as Dane Hardy (Willingboro, N.J.) reached on an Chicago State error. NYIT led 3-0. The final run of the inning was scored on a Steve McNamara (Levittown, N.Y.) single up the middle. Robert Loftus (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored as a pinch runner for Hardy. NYIT led 4-0.
The Cougars broke free of five scoreless innings with a single run in the bottom half of the sixth. As outfielder Weston Lewis singled through the right side, Jonathon Carpen scored. Carpen got on with a base hit.
The Bears earned their fifth run of the game in the seventh as Valdez singled to center field to plate sophomore Ali Rodriguez (Yorktown, Va.). He reached on an infield single. NYIT won 5-1.
The win went to senior RHP Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Canada). He tossed a 7.0 inning complete game to gain his first win of the season. Wasmund gave up one run and struck out two. The Cougars scattered seven hits in the outing. The loss went to starter Steven O'Hair (0-6).
The Bears and Cougars continue GWC action on Saturday, Apr. 16 with a Noon doubleheader. The series comes to a close on Sunday, Apr. 17 with a single game at Noon.
