NYIT Softball Splits Doubleheader With Bridgeport

Old Westbury, N.Y. (Apr.17, 2011) – NYIT Softball came back to life on Sunday as they ended a 13 game losing streak with a split against Bridgeport.

In game one of the doubleheader the bats finally came to life in the 8-3 victory. However the celebration was short lived as the Bears were forced to forfeit game two.

NYIT improved to 5-26 on the year and 2-16 in ECC play. Bridgeport is now 6-24 on the year and earned their first conference win with the forfeit to improve to 1-15.

For the Bears, Junior Melina Trujillo (Tucson, Ariz.) led the team with three hits on the game and scored two runs with an RBI. Junior Jackie Enlund (Rocky Point, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 on the day while driving in a team-high two runs in the victory.

Junior Natasha Milosevich (Torrance, Calif.) pitched a solid game on the mound to earn her fourth win of the season.

The Purple Knights were led by Nicole Steiner offensively. She went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI on the day.

Game 1 – NYIT 8, BRIDGEPORT 3

Bridgeport jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, Nicole Steiner and Tori Tenzyk each drove in a run.

NYIT wasted no time responding scoring three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Enlund tied the game up at 2-2 with an RBI single to drive in Sophomore Lynsey Michaud (Bristol, Conn.). Two batters later Redondo stepped up and broke the tie with a two-out double to make it a 3-2 game, NYIT.

The offense didn’t stop there, in the third inning they rallied off five hits to tack on four more runs. Enlund once again added an RBI single to cap off the rally and make it a 7-3 ballgame. The Bears would add one more in the fourth inning when Trujillo hit an RBI single to make it an 8-3 game, which is how it ended.

On the mound, Milosevich pitched a complete game. She allowed three runs with eight hits and nine strikeouts on her way to earning the win.

Game 2 – BRIDGEPORT 7, NYIT 0

NYIT was forced to forfeit game two of the doubleheader due to the limited availability of its roster.

NYIT will play next on Tuesday, Apr. 19 against Mercy in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
