NYIT Softball Falls 9-4 to Concordia

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Mar. 9, 2011) – Four different Bears scored as NYIT softball faced a 9-4 season-opening loss to Concordia Wednesday afternoon.

The battle in the pitcher’s circle went to Alexa Rosella (3-1). She threw five innings and struck out four. Junior pitcher Jamie Brooker (Callahan, Fla.) was dealt the loss. She struck out three in her first complete game of the season.

NYIT was first to score as Martha Redondo (Tucson, Ariz.) hit a leadoff double off the centerfield wall. Brigette Kirschmer (Aurora, Colo.) then singled to right field to bring home Redondo. After moving around the bases due to errors and fielder’s choices, Kirschmer plated an unearned run. The Bears led 2-0.

However, Concordia would rally back in the second inning to take a one-run lead, 3-2. Yet, Maura Cien-Mayer (Chula Vista, Calif.) was driven home in the bottom of the inning to knot the score, 3-3. After a quick top of the third, Brookerhit a solo home run in the third inning to give NYIT a 4-3 advantage. But Concordia’s pitching kept the Bears silent for the remainder of the contest as the Clippers added one six more runs to win the game.

NYIT returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 12 against the College of Saint Rose in Clermont, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the National Softball Training Center.
