Old Westbury, N.Y. (Apr.15, 2011) – Dowling college swept a doubleheader on Friday afternoon from the NYIT Softball team.
With the two wins on Friday Dowling improved to 25-2 overall with a perfect 15-0 conference record. NYIT dropped to 4-23 on the year with a 1-13 conference record.
The Golden Lions were led by their pitching; they held the Bears offense to zero runs on the day. Offensively, Emily Slack was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and six RBI on the day.
For the Bears, Melina Trujillo (Tucson, Ariz.) went 2-for-4 on the day while senior Martha Redondo (Tucson, Ariz.) went 2-for-6 in the doubleheader.
Game 1 – DOWLING 10, NYIT 0
Dowling had control of game one from start to finish on their way to the 10-0 win.
Deana Tortorici went 2-for-3 with four RBI in the game one. She hit a double in the first inning to drive in two runs to get the Golden Lions on the board, then a triple in the second inning to drive in two more. Kristen Weeks followed up her triple in the second with a homerun to left field which was all the offense Dowling would need.
For NYIT, Martha Redondo and Melina Trujillo each singled in the first inning. The Bears were unable to drive them in and those would turn out to be the team’s only hits in the game. Junior Jackie Enlund (Rocky Point, N.Y.) started on the mound and was roughed up early and often in this one on her way to taking the lose.
Felicia Mendoza started for the Golden Lions and earned her 14th victory of the year. Cameron pitched two scoreless innings of relief as well.
Game 2 – DOWLING 14, NYIT 0
The Golden Lions continued their dominance into game two of the doubleheader.
For Dowling, Emily Slack was 2-for-3 on the game with four RBI. In the first inning she drove a run in with a single and in the fourth inning she hit a three run homerun to make the score 14-0 which is how it ended.
Jesse Stavola started for Dowling and threw four inning allowing three hits with 11 strikeouts to earn her 11th win of the season.
For NYIT, Junior Natasha Milosevich (Torrance, Calif.) pitched a complete game for the Bears but she was no match for the Golden Lions. The offense never came to life but Redondo and Trujillo each had a single in the game.

NYIT will play next on Friday, Apr. 16 against C.W. Post at the NYIT Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
