OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 27, 2011) – NYIT men’s basketball faced its fourth straight loss as Dowling College posted a 69-58 victory Thursday night in East Coast Conference play. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 6-10 on the season and 4-8 in the league, while the Golden Lions improved to 5-12 overall and 5-7 in ECC action.
Sophomore Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) posted a game-high 18 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while junior Russell Holloway (Budd Lake, N.J.) added 10 points.
Scurry opened the game with a three-pointer at 19:40 but Jake Stevens responded less than a minute later with a trey to knot the score. The Bears then grabbed a small two-point edge on a three-point play from senior Daniel Berg (Osteras, Norway), but that would be the last lead NYIT would hold as Dowling dominated the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
With 6:47 remaining in the first half, the Golden Lions claimed their largest lead of the game on a layup from Corwin Austin, 29-11. Dowling led 39-25 at halftime.
Opening the second half, the Bears never gave up the fight and were able to come within three-points, 53-50, with 6:58 to play. However, NYIT could not even the score and Dowling went on to win with a 16-5 run to close out the game, 69-58.
For the Golden Lions, Sean Smith posted 14 points, while Jake Stevens and John Merchant each tallied 11 points.
NYIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 29 on the road at Mercy College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
