NYIT Comes From Behind to Defeat Northern Colorado 4-3
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (May 26, 2011) – Senior George Carroll (Bayside, N.Y.) doubled down the right field line to drive in the game-winning runs that lifted NYIT baseball to a 4-3 extra inning victory over Northern Colorado in the loser’s bracket of the 2011 Great West Conference Tournament at Kraft Field Thursday afternoon.

Freshman Rob Cafiero (Bethpage, N.Y.) scored the game-tying run and senior Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) earned the game-winner.

The game was decided in the 10th inning as Casey Coy scored on an NYIT throwing error. Coy reached on catcher’s interference. NYIT then retaliated in the bottom half to knot the score and win the game. The Bears loaded the bases as Cafiero doubled down the left field line, Valdez was intentionally walked and Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) hit an infield single.

The Bears made it a ballgame in the bottom of the seventh as NYIT knotted the score 2-2 with a two-run homer from junior infielder Sebastian Grazziani (Whitestone, N.Y.). Grazziani, who went 3-for-4 and was a single shy of the cycle, drove home second baseman Steve McNamara (Levittown, N.Y.) with the blast over the left field fence.

The Bears fought until the end as they loaded the bases in the ninth with a double from Grazziani and back-to-back walks dealt to pinch hitters Dan Lackner (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Michael Iglesias (Bronx, N.Y.). However, once again, the runners were left stranded.

Prior to that the Bears trailed 2-0 as Northern Colorado put up runs in the third and sixth. NYIT had a solid opportunity to score in the bottom of the second as Grazziani tripled for the second time of the season. However, with two outs, he was left stranded as Eric Cos (Coral Gables, Fla.) struck out to end the inning.

The Battle of the Bears went to senior Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Ontario, Canada). He tossed one inning in relief, surrendering an unearned run. Starter Ryan Dillabough (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) tossed a season-high nine innings and struck out six.

NYIT will battle Houston Baptist in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 27. First pitch is slated for Noon EST.
