NYIT Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Harvard

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2011) - NYIT baseball split its first doubleheader with Harvard on Saturday at President's Field. The Bears won the first game 3-2, while the Crimson took game two 10-6. The teams continue action on Sunday, Mar. 27 with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.

For the day, Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, N.Y.) led NYIT with a .714 clip and a .778 on-base percentage. He scored twice, tallied three RBI and swiped three bags. On the mound, sophomore Ryan Dillabough (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) earned the win with 2.1 innings in relief. The loss in game two was dealt to starting pitcher Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Canada), who went 6.2 innings, struck out three and gave up seven of the Crimson's 10 runs.

Samuel Franklin went 5-for-9 for Harvard, scoring once. Marcus Way and Dillon O'Neill each scored three times. The win in game two went to Max Perlman, who tossed 5.0 innings and struck out six.

Game 1 - NYIT 3, Harvard 2

The Bears scored first as senior Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) was driven home as Eric Cos (Coral Gables, Fla.) grounded out at first in the second inning. However, the lead was short-lived. Harvard responded in the fourth inning with two runs from Sean O'Hara and Danny Moskovits. The pair were plated on a base hit from Cole Arledge. The Crimson led 2-1.

NYIT then knotted the score in the fifth inning and plated the game-winning run in the sixth. Bears pitching and defense successfully held off the Crimson for the remainder of the seven inning game. Campbell scored his first run of the day as third baseman Sebastian Grazziani (Whitestone, N.Y.) was pitched a bases loaded walk. Campbell originally got on base with a single down the right field line. After a pitching change in the sixth, freshman first baseman Rob Cafiero (Bethpage, N.Y.) scored the game-winner when Campbell hit a one-out single through the left side.

Game 2 - Harvard 10, NYIT 6

The Crimson exploded for five runs in the first two innings. The Bears were able to bring the score within two runs by the end of the fourth inning. In the second inning, senior George Carroll (Bayside, N.Y.) went yard for the second time this season. It was a two run blast to right field that also scored Cos, who got on with a leadoff walk. Then in the fourth inning, Carroll scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-3 game.

Harvard pulled away 7-3 in the seventh inning as Way hit a leadoff homer run to right field. Jake McGuiggan then scored on a Hatch two-out single through the left side. Yet, the Bears were not about to back down and put together a three-run bottom of the seventh to come within one run, 7-6. Campbell reached on a fielder's choice, while freshman shortstop Michael Iglesias (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore outfielder Robert Loftus (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored. The third run was driven in on a Smith single through the left side. Campbell was plated on the base hit.

However that was the closest the Bears could get as Harvard would rally for three runs in the eighth to win 10-6.
