NYIT Baseball Opens GWC Play this Week Against Northern Colorado
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2011) - NYIT baseball opens Great West Conference play this weekend with a four-game series against visiting Northern Colorado. The Battle of the Bears opens on Friday, Apr. 8 at 3 p.m. at President’s field. Action continues on Saturday with a Noon doubleheader and concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. single game.

LAST TIME OUT
NYIT faced a tough 12-7 loss to Fordham on Wednesday. Senior outfielder Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the loss, while senior first baseman Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) score twice and junior Sebastian Grazziani (Whitestone, N.Y.) tallied two RBI. 
 
BEAR TRACKS
NYIT enters the weekend looking to get back on the winning side. The Bears are 1-4 in their last five outings and 4-15 on the season. Valdez leads with a .375 clip, nine RBI and six doubles. Senior catcher George Carroll (Bayside, N.Y.) also has nine RBI, while junior infielder Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, N.Y.) leads the sleuth with nine runs.  On the mound, Wasmund has struck out 16 in his five appearances.
 
GONE STREAKING
NYIT’s Valdez is currently riding a team-best 14 game hitting streak that began on March 12 in game two against Albany and has included 19 hits, four runs, four doubles, five RBI and one home run.
 
SCOUTING NORTHERN COLORADO
The Bears enter the first weekend of conference play with a 3-21 overall record. Northern Colorado is 1-12 on the road. Casey Coy leads the squad with 19 runs, while T.J. Berge has 13 RBI, seven doubles and 18 runs. In their last outing, UNC fell 10-6 to Air Force. Freshman Josh Tinnon (0-5) was dealt the loss. Marcus Valenzuela went 2-for-5, while Bret Fanning had two hits and Jarod Berggren had two RBI.
 
SERIES INFO
Friday’s game marks the 10th meeting between the teams in a series that dates back to 2004. Northern Colorado holds a 6-3 edge in the series.
 
ON DECK
The Bears returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 13 on the road against the Saints of Siena College. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
