Game 1 Box Score (PDF)OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Mar. 12, 2011) - NYIT baseball lost a hard-fought home opening doubleheader to UAlbany Saturday afternoon at President's Field. The Great Danes won the first game 8-2 and took the second game 3-1. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 0-6 on the season. NYIT will look to prevent the sweep in the third and final game of the series on Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m.
For the day, junior Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, N.Y.) batted 2-for-5, while senior George Carroll (Bayside, N.Y.) hit is first home run of the season and collected two RBI. On the mound, senior RHP Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) and freshman RHP John Duggan (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) were dealt the losses.
For Albany, Nolan Gaige went 4-for-5 with three runs and two doubles. Pete DiResta batted .500 wit three runs, a double and a home run. He also picked up two RBI. On the mound, Kasciem Graham (1-0) and Dave Kubiak (1-1) earned the wins.
Game 1 • Albany 8, NYIT 2 (7 innings)
Although the Great Danes led 3-0 by the fifth inning, the Bears made it a one-run game as catcher Carroll launched one over the right field wall. He brought home with him Eric Cos (Coral Gables, Fla.), who got on with a leadoff single. The score remained that way until the top of the seventh inning, when UAlbany rallied for five runs for the final score 8-2.
Game 2 • Albany 3, NYIT 1 (7 innings)
Once again, the Great Danes got on board in the first inning as DiResta hit a solo home run to right centerfield. UAlbany then tacked on two more runs in the top of the third. Senior Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) prevented the shutout as he plated Rob Cafiero (Bethpage, N.Y.), who reached on an error by UAlbany's first baseman D.J. Hoagboon. However, that was the closest the Bears would get. On the mound, sophomore RHP Tom Cardona (Bronx, N.Y.) pitched 3.0 innings of shutout relief, while the Bears tried to even the score.
