MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (March 6, 2011) - NYIT baseball faced its third straight loss on Sunday as it fell 24-4 to No. 18 College of Charleston in the third and final day of the CoC Classic.
NYIT (0-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring on a passed ball and a RBI groundout to first. Sophomore Ali Rodriguez (Yorktown, Va.) and junior Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, N.Y.) tallied the runs for the Bears, while senior Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) picked up the RBI. However, Charleston would take a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the second.
The Bears scored again in the top of the third as senior George Carroll (Bayside, N.Y.) singled that brought home senior Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.). Smith got on after being hit by a pitch. NYIT trailed 5-3. However, the Cougars plated four more runs in the bottom of the frame to claim a 9-3 lead. Then in the fourth, Charleston exploded four 13 runs to pull away, 22-3. NYIT's last scoring effort came in the eighth as Valdez scored on a Cougars fielding error.
RHP Rob Harding picked up the victory for the Cougars, tossing a perfect 1.3 innings in relief. The loss went to J.C. Costa (Flushing, N.Y.), who pitched 2.2 innings, struck out five and gave up nine runs on five hits. Of the nine, only three were earned.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 8 on the road against the Rams of Fordham. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Houlihan Park in Bronx, N.Y.
