OREM, Utah (Apr. 28, 2011) - Freshman Rob Cafiero (Bethpage, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 as NYIT baseball fell 18-0 on the road at Utah Valley in Great West Conference action. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 10-21 on the season and 6-4 in league play. The Wolverines improved to 16-19 overall and 8-1 in GWC play.
The battle on the mound went Jeremy Genklek (4-3). He tossed the full seven innings with no runs and striking out three. The loss went to Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Ontario, Canada), who dropped to 1-7 on the season. He went 2.2. innings, surrendering 10 runs on nine hits. He was relieved by Jose Checo (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), who went 3.1 innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits and striking out one.
The Wolverines scored multiple runs in all but two innings, where they only tacked on one. NYIT scattered nine hits over the seven innings and had opportunities in the first, fourth and seventh innings to end the shutout.
NYIT and Utah Valley continue play on Friday, Apr. 29 with a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. ET. The weekend's action comes to a close on Saturday, Apr. 30 with a single game at 3 p.m. ET.
