Old Westbury, N.Y. (Apr.9, 2011) – NYIT Softball was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday against Molloy College. The Lions took game one by the score 11-0, they followed that up with a 9-0 victory in game two to complete the sweep.
With the losses, NYIT fell to 4-10 overall and 1-9 in the conference. Molloy improved to 21-8 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
The Bears offense was led by junior Melina Trujillo (Tucson, Ariz.). She went 2-for-4 in the doubleheader with two singles and a sacrifice bunt.
Molloy received great pitching in both games. In game one Meagan Butterworth threw a complete game shutout, she allowed five hits with eight strikeouts. Kelly Jansen followed up that performance with a complete game shutout herself. Jansen allowed just three hits with 13 strikeouts in game two.
Game 1 – MOLLOY 11, NYIT 0
NYIT never got things going in game one as they fell 11-0 to start off the doubleheader.
Junior Natasha Milosevich (Torrance, Calif.) started for the Bears and was roughed up for 11 runs on the day. Trujillo supplied the Bears offense going 2-for-2 with two singles on the game.
Meagan Butterworth controlled the game from start to finish. She went the distance surrounding five hits with eight strikeouts on her way to earning the win. Alexander Sydor got the Lions offense going in the third inning when her double drove in two runs to make it a 3-0 game. Haley Calderwell went 2-for-4 with five RBI on the game. In the fifth inning she hit a grand slam during a seven-run rally.
They would go on to make it an 11-0 game in the fifth inning, which is how it ended.
Game 2 – MOLLOY 9, NYIT 0
Game two was too much of the same story for the Bears. Molloy’s pitching proved to be too much and their bats stayed alive as the Lions went on to a 9-0 win to complete the sweep.
Junior Jackie Enlund (Rocky Point, N.Y.) allowed nine runs on 14 hits on the mound for the Bears. The Bears offense threatened early in the second inning with hits by both Lynsey Michaud (Bristol, Conn.) and Milosevich. But they were left stranded and the Bears would only get one more hit on the game.
Kelly Jansen kept NYIT in check all game; she threw a complete game three hit shutout with 13 strikeouts for the win. Calderwell was at it again for the Lions, She went 3-for-5 with three RBI in game two. Lauren Alexander went 3-for-3 with three singles and a walk with two RBI to help lead the Lions offense in route to the win.
On Deck
NYIT will play next on Tuesday, Apr. 12 against Dowling in Brookhaven. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
