Men's Hoops Tops Caldwell 77-68

CALDWELL, N.J. (Dec. 19, 2010) - Led by senior Jerrell Walker's (Stockton, Calif.) 19 points, NYIT men's basketball defeated Caldwell College 77-68 in the final game of the ECAC Holiday Classic Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Bears improved to 4-4 on the season.

Also scoring double-figures for the Bears was sophomore Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) and senior Daniel Berg (Osteras, Norway), who dropped 16 and 10 points, respectively.

After exchanging points in the opening minutes of the game, NYIT worked its way to a six-point edge, 17-11, with 11:04 to play. However, Caldwell fought to erase that deficit with a 12-4 run that put the Cougars up top, 23-21, with 4:44 on the clock. Yet, the Bears reclaimed the lead with a three-pointer from Eric Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) and a free throw put NYIT ahead 25-23. The half was knotted once again at 25-25 with 3:13 left but five points from Scurry sparked a 7-3 NYIT run to close out the half and make the score 32-29 at the break.

Although the Cougars rallied for seven points to start the second half, NYIT tallied the next eight points to grab a 42-36 advantage with 16:15 remaining. Caldwell knotted the game 52-52 for the final time on a layup from Tyler Emmons at 10:36 only to see NYIT produce an 11-2 run to claim a 63-54 edge with seven minutes to play. The Bears continued to control the scoreboard, leading by as many as 12 points down the stretch.

For the Cougars, Antonio Brimley led the game with 21 points and eight rebounds.

NYIT returns to action on the road at the University of New Haven on Dec. 30. Tip off is slated for 4 p.m.
