ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2011) – NYIT men’s basketball brought the 2010-2011 regular season to a close with a 63-52 loss on the road at Molloy Saturday afternoon.
Despite the loss, the Bears (12-14, 10-11 ECC) earned the fourth seed in the East Coast Conference playoffs and will host the Lions of Molloy (9-17, 9-12) on Wednesday, March 2 at 6 p.m. at Recreation Hall. The “Paint the House Blue” event offers free popcorn to the first 100 NYIT students with school ID. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door on game day.
Senior Jerrell Walker (Stockton, Calif.) and sophomore Kayvon Roberts (Corona, N.Y.) led NYIT with 10 points each, while Roberts grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
For the Lions, John Petrucelli led with a game-high 26 points, while Dariel Concha compiled a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Molloy outshot NYIT 48% to 34% from the floor and held a 34-31 rebounding margin.
The Lions claimed an early 8-2 advantage, but the Bears rallied on points from Russell Holloway (Budd Lake, N.J.), Daniel Berg (Osteras, Norway) and Walker to knot the half, 10-10, with 11:10 to play. NYIT then gained control of the scoreboard on a three-pointer from Berg, 17-15. With 4:59 remaining, junior Jahari McKnight (El Sobrante, Calif.) put the Bears up 22-17, but a minute later the Lions responded with a 6-1 run to tie the game, 23-23.
Yet, sophomore Robert Carroll (Bohemia, N.Y.) converted a traditional three-point play to give NYIT control once again, 26-23. The two teams then exchanged baskets for the final three minutes with Molloy earning a 31-30 edge heading into halftime.
The game was tied for a final time at 12:36 in the second half. The Bears fought back from a four-point deficit to knot the game, 42-42, on a free throw from Holloway. However, Concha nailed a layup to give the Lions the lead for good. Molloy pulled ahead on a 14-5 run to claim an 11-point edge, 60-49, with 3:30 left to play. The Lions led by as much as 14-points, 63-49, before a series of free throws from McKnight and junior Bernard Brooks (LaGrange, Ga.) brought the game to a close, 63-52.
