Men's Basketball Falls 69-60 at Felician

RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Dec. 31, 2011) - Three Bears tallied double-digit points as NYIT men's basketball faced a hard-fought 69-60 loss on the road at Felician Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 3-7 on the season, while the Golden Falcons improved to 3-7 overall.

Juniors Kayvon Roberts (Corona, N.Y.) and Antoine Brown (Washington, D.C.) posted 15 points each, while junior Ryan Williams (Stockton, Calif.) added 11 points off the bench. Roberts dished out a game-high six assists and Brown had a team-best six rebounds and three steals. Williams added two blocks for the Bears and shot 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Rebounding and free throw shooting dominated the game for Felician. The Golden Falcons had a 49-31 edge over the Bears in rebounding with a 24-8 mark on the offensive boards. Felician also shot 82.4% from the free throw line, while NYIT shot 44.4%.

The opening minutes of the first half were tightly played before NYIT used a three-pointer by Roberts to spark a 9-2 run that gave the Bears a 19-12 lead. Felician tried to fight back and knot the score but the closest the Golden Falcons would get was within two points on three occasions. The last time was with 5:10 to play on a layup by Antoine Obery, but NYIT responded with back-to-back layups by Roberts to earn a 25-19 edge a minute later. A layup by Williams closed out the scoring in the first half and sent the Bears to the locker room with a 27-21 edge.

The Bears' momentum continued in the beginning of the second half as a layup by junior Azel Prather Jr. (Glenarden, Md.) put NYIT up 33-25 with 15:05 to go. However, a 7-0 rally from Felician knotted the game 35-35 with 13:09 remaining. The score was tied once more by the Golden Falcons but the Bears regained control with a three-pointer by Roberts, 40-37. Yet, Felician remained closed behind and tied the game twice more. The last tie was at 47-47 with 6:33 left to play. A trey by John Tello but the Golden Falcons ahead and began a 16-8 run that gave Felician a 63-55 edge with less than a minute to play. NYIT did not give up its fight and came within five points 65-60 with 18 seconds remaining but after a series of fouls and a technical issued to Roberts with seven seconds to play, Felician went on to win 69-60 on free throws by Anthony D. Green.

For Felician, Green led with a game-high 16 points and was 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Tello added 15 points, while Obery had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

NYIT returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4 when it hosts Mercy in East Coast Conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Recreation Hall.
