Men's Basketball Faces Hard-Fought 109-73 Loss to UDC

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2012) - Despite having four players in double-digit points, NYIT men's basketball faced a hard-fought 109-73 loss to the University of D.C. Wednesday night at Recreation Hall. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 5-6 in league play and 8-12 on the season. Meanwhile, the Firebirds improved to 18-3 overall and 9-2 in league play.

Junior Antoine Brown (Washington, D.C.) led the bears in scoring with 17 points, while David Naves (Bowie, Md.), Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) and Jahari McKnight (El Sobrante, Calif.) each added 12 points in the loss. 

The Firebirds had six players in double-digits with Nigel Munson leading the game with 20 points and seven rebounds. 

UDC jumped to an early 12-3 lead but the Bears fought back to knot the score 12-12 on a layup by ECC Rookie of the Week Jahleel Felix (Flushing, N.Y.) with 13:12 to play. The half was tied five more times before the visitors jumped on a 14-2 run that gave the Firebirds a 41-29 edge with 3:28 remaining. Brown and Scurry interrupted with jumpers but UDC closed out the first half leading 45-33. 

The Firebirds continued their domination in the second half and earned a 40-point advantage, 90-50, with 5:46 remaining. The Bears fought hard to close the gaps with three-pointers by Mc Knights, Naves, Bernard Brooks (LaGrange, Ga.) but it was not enough at the Firebirds held on for a 109-73 win.

NYIT men's basketball returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 when it hosts Molloy College in East Coast Conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Recreation Hall.
