OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2012) – Junior Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) lead all scorers with 15 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists as he helped NYIT men’s basketball to a hard-fought 69-65 victory over Queens College. With the win the Bears evened their East Coast Conference record at 4-4, while their overall record improved to 7-10.
NYIT started the game slow as they let Queens College jump out and take an early 10-4 lead. Scurry and redshirt freshman Jahleel Felix (Flushing, N.Y.), who scored 11 points on the night, kept the Bears within distance by attacking the basket and getting free throw attempts.
Felix acrobatic “and-one” play put the Bears up 24-21 with 8:40 left in the first half and gave the home team the momentum. The rest of the period was very evenly played as the teams went back and forth exchanging baskets. After a late rally by Queens, the Knights managed to take a small 36-32 lead going into half time.
The second half started as the first half ended with the two teams trading baskets, possession for possession. With 6:30 left in the regulation, senior Jahari McKnight (El Sobrante, Calif.) gave the home team a one point lead 53-52 with a three pointer. But Queens College yet again made a comeback and took a small four point lead with 2:30 left in the game.
Felix started his own comeback and made a three pointer and a layup to bring NYIT back and tie the game at 64-64 with 1:30 left in the game. Junior Antoine Brown (Washington, D.C.) then made a layup to give NYIT the lead with 66-64, causing Queens to take a time out.
McKnight then split a pair of free throws to give the Bears a three point edge 67-64. After free throw attempts from Queens that made the score 67-65, the Knights sent senior Russell Holloway (Budd Lake, N.J.) to the line. Holloway made no mistakes as he closed the game out giving NYIT a 69-65 final score.
NYIT men’s basketball return to action on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. when they travel to next door rival C.W. Post, for another East Coast Conference battle.
