OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Dec. 13, 2011) - Danny McDermott, a sophomore defenseman on NYIT's nationally ranked lacrosse team, was one of 23 under-19 players to be chosen to represent Canada at the 2012 World Lacrosse Championship in Finland this July.
"It feels absolutely phenomenal to have been selected," said McDermott. "It is an experience of a lifetime and a great honor."
McDermott, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, submitted an athletic resume and was invited to a regional camp for the top 150 players in British Columbia. From there, McDermott made the top 50 cut and, over the Thanksgiving break, he participated in national tryouts just outside of Toronto, where coaches from the U19 Canadian team selected the final 23 for the roster.
"Danny is an exceptional student-athlete who came to NYIT last spring, stepped into a starting defensive role and has never looked back," said NYIT head lacrosse coach Bill Dunn. "It wasn't a surprise that he made the U19 Canadian team. He is an example of the type of student-athletes we have had here both past and present, and the kind of student-athlete we will hope for in the future. He will represent not only his and NYIT, but also NCAA Division II lacrosse as a whole in Finland."
