Late Rally Falls Short as Bears Lose 92-81 to Clippers

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2011) - Four Bears scored in double-digits as the NYIT men's basketball team faced a hard-fought 92-81 loss on the road at Concordia (N.Y.) Wednesday evening. Junior Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) led the team with 20 points as NYIT dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Junior Kayvon Roberts (Corona, N.Y.) added 19 points for NYIT while senior Russell Holloway (Budd Lake, N.Y.) had 15 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Rounding out the Bears top scorers was junior Azel Prather Jr. (Glenarden, N.Y.), who had 10 points and six rebounds.

For Concordia, Argelix Gil led the game with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bears took early control of the scoreboard but the Clippers fought back to knot the first half 12-12 at the 13:19 mark. The score was tied once more before Concordia went on a 10-2 run to claim a 24-20 advantage with 7:30 to play. Although NYIT continued to fight, Concordia claimed its largest lead of the half with 3:25 remaining. The Clippers led 34-26 after a layup by Kyle Kube. Yet, the Bears chipped away at the lead and brought the score within one point just seconds before half time. The 12-5 rally began with a three-pointer by Scurry, included seven points from Roberts and ended on a layup by Antoine Brown (Washington, D.C.). The Bears trailed 39-38 heading into the second half.

NYIT continued its momentum into the opening minutes of the second half. Roberts reclaimed the lead for NYIT with a layup just 11 seconds in and the Bears lead by as many as five points, 48-43, on a free throw by Scurry. However, Concordia did not back down and rallied to take a two-point edge 52-50 on a trey from Dominique Spann. But redshirt-freshman Will Udoh (Laurel, Md.) responded with a dunk that tied the game at 52-52 with 13:19 to go. The score was tied once more before the Clippers unleashed a handful of three-points to claim a nine-point edge, 68-59, with 7:05 to play.

The game was put out of reach for NYIT with two minutes to play when Concordia earned a 15-point edge 83-68. Yet, the Bears did not give up. Starting with a trey from Jahari McKnight (El Sobrante, Calif.), the Bears went on an 11-3 run to bring the game within seven points, 86-79. However, that was the closest NYIT would get as Concordia went on to win 82-11.

Concordia out-shot NYIT 53.8% to 44.8%, while NYIT held a minor 67.5% to 63.6% free throw shooting edge.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19 when they host the Tigers of Holy Family. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Recreation Hall.
