OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2011) – Former NYIT softball student-athlete Brigette Kirschmer (Aurora, Colo.) was selected by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as a recipient of the Division II Degree Completion Award. Because of this award, Kirschmer is able to graduate in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
“I am extremely grateful to the NCAA for selecting me as a recipient for the Division II Degree Completion Award,” said Kirschmer. “This has given me the opportunity to come back to NYIT and finish school and I’m really excited about that.”
The 2011 NYIT Female Athlete of the Year, Kirschmer played two seasons for the Bears and finished with a career .288 average with 38 RBIs, 14 doubles and five home runs. She registered a career 105 putouts and a .921 fielding percentage as an outfielder.
The NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award Program has been implemented to award deserving Division II student-athletes with financial assistance to complete their undergraduate studies. Candidates included students who have exhausted athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid. The selection process for the national award emphasized academic performance, in addition to other factors as such as financial circumstances, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.
