OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (June 20, 2011) – Recent NYIT alumnus George Carroll (B.S. ’10), co-captain and starting catcher for the NYIT baseball program, signed with the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball as a free agent on the last day of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.
Upon signing, Carroll, a native of Bayside, N.Y., immediately traveled to Florida where he is currently at extended spring training in Dunedin. He will begin rookie ball in the Gulf Coast League with the Dunedin Blue Jays.
During his career at NYIT Carroll appeared in 130 games, starting 117. He batted .269 with 64 runs, 19 doubles, 10 home runs and 64 RBI. He was credited with 605 putouts with a career-best 221 as a senior. A 2006 graduate of Holy Cross High School, Carroll was a CHSAA All-City first team selection and was named CHSAA Catcher of the Year as a senior. He also played one season at Hofstra before transferring to NYIT.
