Bears Edged 1-0 by Highlanders
Bronx, N.Y. (March 5, 2010) - The NYIT baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first two innings, but Fordham would score five unanswered runs over the next seven frames to defeat the Bears 5-2 at Houlihan Park on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Bears to 0-2 on the season while Fordham improves to 2-6 overall.
The Bears scored in each of the first two innings to build that 2-0 lead. In the first, senior Brian Smith (Nesconset, NY) opened the game with a single, moved to third on a pair of groundouts, and scored on a single by senior Christian Dienna (Old Bethpage, NY).
In the second, Smith registered an RBI-single to score freshman Robert Loftus (Massapequa, NY) for the 2-0 edge.
The Rams tied the game at two, scoring in the second and fifth innings. In the bottom of the second, with runners at first and third, Ryan Maghini got caught in a rundown, allowing Ryan McCrann to score before Maghini was tagged out.
In the fifth Mike Mobbs opened the frame with a walk, followed by McCrann getting hit with a pitch. After a fly out advanced Mobbs to third, Angelo Ponte lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring McCrann to tie the game.
Fordham then took the lead with two runs in the sixth, and tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday at Fordham at 3 p.m., before hosting the University at Albany for a four-game series starting on Friday.
