DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2012) - Rookie Jahleel Felix (Flushing, N.Y.) tallied a season-high 22 points to lead NYIT men's basketball to a 90-79 win over Mercy College in East Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon. Felix was one of four Bears to score double-digits as NYIT improved to 8-11 on the season and evened to 5-5 in league play.
Junior transfer Antoine Brown (Washington, D.C.) added 19 points and had a game-high six steals, while junior Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) chipped in with 15 points and shot 70% from the charity stripe. Junior transfer David Naves (Bowie, Md.) rounded out the top scorers with 11 points and four steals and junior transfer Azel Prather, Jr (Glenarden, Md.) tied his season-best with a game-high 13 rebounds.
The first half was virtually even the entire way with each team leading by no more than three points. Yet, the Bears headed into halftime with a 42-39 advantage.
Out of the break, the Bears clawed their way to a seven point edge 60-53 with 11:50 to play after a layup by Prather, Jr. However, the Mavericks rallied back and knotted the score 60-60 on a layup by Jordan Lee. But the Bears did not back back down and opened a 14-1 run with a free throw by Scurry at 10:23. The stretch ended on a three-pointer by Jahari McKnight (El Sobrante, Calif.) that made the score 74-61 in favor of the visitors. From there, NYIT piled on some more baskets and never looked back as the Bears earned a 90-79 victory.
For Mercy, Colin Senior led with 23 points and Joseph Pope added 14 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 8 with they host the Firebirds of University of D.C. in a "Purple-Out' for Relay for Life event. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Recreation Hall.
