ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Nov. 28, 2011) – Freshman Amber Davis (Mastic, N.Y.) led with 16 points as NYIT women’s basketball evened to 3-3 on the season with a 63-42 victory over Dominican Monday night.
"Amber Davis was fantastic, playing almost 20 solid minutes," said head coach Anthony Crocitto. "We had some new people step up tonight and that was a great help in the win. Sabrinna Moore's shutdown defense was the brightest spot and it was nice to see Alex Venuto's hard work pay off."
Davis was perfect from the free throw line (5-for-5) and went 5-for-7 from the floor. Senior Cierra Baker (Windsor, Conn.) added 11 points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds and five steals.
NYIT narrowly out-shot Dominican 34.4% to 32.6% and caused 27 Charger turnovers while committing only 12 of its own. The Bears also held a 41-38 rebounding over the Chargers.
The first half was closely played as the score was tied five times. After each tie, the Bears came out on top. The score was last knotted 21-21 with 6:43 to play on a jumper by Dominican’s Marley Klunk, which caused NYIT to call a time out. Out of the break, Davis knotted down her only three-pointer of the game to give the lead back to the Bears 24-21 with 5:48 to go. But layup from KC Jentzen brought the Chargers back within one point and after three scoreless minutes, Klunk gave Dominican its first lead 25-24 with just under a minute to play. Yet, a trey from Alex Venuto (Ossining, N.Y.) sent the Bears to the locker room leading 27-25.
NYIT continued its run in the opening minutes of the second half and quickly climbed to a 12-point advantage, 39-27, on a jumper from Nikki Jo Rotolo (Rome, N.Y.). The Bears never looked back and led by as many as 25-points with 1:40 to play on free throws by Davis.
NYIT saw 34 of its 63 points come off the bench and 31 off of Charger turnovers.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 6 when they host the Pioneers of C.W. Post in East Coast Conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Recreation Hall and will feature legendary Knicks announcer Mike “Wally” Walczewski on the microphone announcing the game.
