OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2011) - NYIT baseball faced a tough midweek, non-conference 20-10 loss to Manhattan College Tuesday afternoon. The two teams combined for 30 runs on 38 hits, with the Jaspers committing four errors to the Bears' one. With the loss, NYIT dropped to 10-20 on the season, while Manhattan improved to 23-12 overall.
Senior George Carroll (Bayside, N.Y.) led the Bears offense batting 3-for-5 with two homerun and a double along with four RBI. Fellow classmate Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a homer and a double. Sophomore Dane Hardy (Willingboro, N.J.) was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI, while junior Sebastian Grazziani (Whitestone, N.Y.) also went yard and drove in two. It was his second homerun of the season.
On the mound, the loss went to sophomore Steve Cotov (Ozone Park, N.Y.). He tossed 4.0 innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits as he dropped to 0-1 on the year. Mike Giordano (6-1) earned the win after 4.0 innings of work. He gave up two runs on two hits and struck out a game-best five batters.
The score was kept tight in the early innings. NYIT trailed only by two runs heading into the fourth inning, 4-2. Both runs were off of homeruns from Valdez and Carroll. However, Manhattan tacked on another run in the fourth and two in the sixth to pull away 7-2.
The Bears still had an opportunity to knot the score; however, the Jaspers rallied for nine runs in the seventh and another four in the eighth to pull away 20-4. NYIT fought hard in the eighth and ninth to mount a comeback, but the closest the Bears would get would be within 10.
Making their career debuts on the mound for NYIT were redshirt freshman Brennan Forster (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and freshman Michael Iglesias (Bronx, N.Y.). Forster tossed 1.2 innings of relief, scattering five hits and giving up four runs. He struck out one. Iglesias, who normally plays infield for the Bears, was the final pitcher for NYIT. He tossed one inning with one hit and no runs.
NYIT returns to action on Thursday, Apr. 28 on the road against Utah Valley in Great West Conference action. First pitch of the four game series is slated for 8 p.m. ET in Orem, Utah.
