Bridgeport Tops NYIT 85-60

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2011) - Reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week Kayvon Roberts (Corona, N.Y.) scored 18 points but it was not enough as NYIT men's basketball was dealt an 85-60 loss by Bridgeport Wednesday night at Recreation Hall. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 10-13 overall and 8-10 in league play. The Purple Knights improved to 15-8 on the season and 15-3 in the ECC.

Sophomore Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) added 11 points for the Bears, as did senior Jerrell Walker (Stockton, Calif.). For the Purple Knights, five players netted double-digits with Dave Boykin pacing the game with 19. Jermaine Washington added 17, while Josh Martin Chipped in with 16 points. Both Msoo Ikyaator and Donte Monte tallied 10 points in the win.

Bridgeport dominated for the start as it jumped to a 9-0 lead in the first minute of play. NYIT fought back to come within two-points, 11-9, on a three-pointer from Jahari McKnight (El Sobrante, Calif.) and a free shot by Roberts. Yet, the Purple Knights held the upperhand. With 7:20 on the clock, Bridgeport climbed to a 32-20 advantage on a three-pointer from Boykin and never looked back. The Purple Knights closed out the first half leading 45-32. The second half was much of the same as Bridgeport earned a 20-point edge, 62-42, with 11:39 remaining. The Purple Knights led by as much as 25 points, 85-58, with 1:04 left on the clock. 

NYIT returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 on the road at Dowling College. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. in Oakdale, N.Y.
