BRIDGEPORT, CONN. (May 1, 2011) – NYIT softball was unable to end their 2011 season on a high note. They dropped their final games of the season on Sunday afternoon against Bridgeport University.
NYIT finishes their season with an overall record of 5-35 and 3-25 in conference play.
Bridgeport ended their season improving to 9-32-1 overall with a 4-23-1 record in conference play.
Nicole Steiner led the way for the Purple Knights offensively. She went 4-for-6 on the day with four runs scored and two RBI. Chloe Shill pitched a complete game to start off the doubleheader allowing only two runs on eight hits.
For the Bears, senior Brigette Kirschmer (Aurora, Colo) went a combined 6-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBI on the day. Junior Natasha Milosevich (Torrance, Calif) went 3-for-4 in game two while scoring a run with an RBI.
Game 1 – BRIDGEPORT 7, NYIT 2
Bridgeport got to work early scoring two runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Emma Wojcik got the scoring going with an RBI double. Two batters later she was driven in by an RBI single from Shill.
After a leadoff single from senior Martha Redondo (Tucson, Ariz.), Milosevich drove her in three batters later with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 Bridgeport lead. That would be as close as the Bears would get.
The Purple Knights would rally to score two run in both the fifth and sixth inning to pull away for good. Noelle Cahill supplied the biggest blow in the sixth with a single to drive in two runs and make it a 7-2 ball game, which is how it ended.
In the losing effort Kirschmer led the Bears offense going 3-for-3 with a run scored. On the mound, Milosevich battled her way through six innings but was unable to contain the Knights bats. She allowed seven runs on 11 hits in the loss.
Chloe Shill pitched a complete game for Bridgeport. She held the Bears to eight hits allowing two runs with five strikeouts on her way to earning the win.
Game 2 – BRIDGEPORT 11, NYIT 6
The Bears got out to a quick start in game two. They jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Kirschmer hit a single to drive in Redondo. However the lead would be short lived.
The Purple Knights struck right back scoring seven runs in the bottom half of the first. Tori Tenzyk and Maria Pellino each drove in two runs a piece during the rally.
NYIT would show some fight in them battling back in the third inning with a four run rally of their own. Kirschmer and Milosevich each added RBI hits in the inning. The Bears had cut the deficit down to two trailing 7-5 after three innings.
In the fifth inning Bridgeport would pull away once and for all scoring three more runs. Nicole Steiner capped the inning off with an RBI triple.
NYIT would try to battle back once again in the seventh inning. Kirschmer led off with a homerun to make it an 11-6 game in favor of Bridgeport. Despite loading the bases following Kirschmer’s homerun with no outs, the Bears were unable to score.
Junior Jackie Enlund (Rocky Point, N.Y.) started for the Bears and was roughed up for ten runs in her 4.2 innings of work in the loss.
Tiffany Irrera pitched a complete game for the Purple Knights. Despite allowing six runs on 14 hits she was able to battle her way through to earn the win.
