SPARKILL, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2011) - Senior Alexis Tyson (North Babylon, N.Y.) led with 21 points, but it was not enough as NYIT women's basketball fell 75-69 on the road at St. Thomas Aquinas Thursday night in East Coast Conference action. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 4-9 on the season and 2-6 in league play. The Spartans remained perfect, 8-0, in ECC action and improved to 12-3 overall.

STAC opened the second half with back-to-back jumpers before NYIT produced eight straight points to knot the score, 43-43, with 17:23 on the clock. The score was tied twice more and the lead changed hands twice but the Bears could not gain a large enough edge. Sparked by a jumper from Theresa Dowling, the Spartans went on an 11-1 run that put them on top, 59-49, with 11:48 left in regulation. Yet, NYIT fought hard to the very end and did not make it an easy win for STAC. The closest the Bears were able to get again was within three points on three occasions. The last was at 4:52 off a deuce from Lynch, 65-62.
For the Spartans, Briana Sloper registered a game-high 28 points and Vareles tied the game-best 11 rebounds.
NYIT returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 on the road at Queens College. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. in Flushing, N.Y.
