OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2011) - NYIT baseball split its second doubleheader of the weekend with Harvard on Sunday. The Crimson (3-15) earned a 3-0 shutout in the first game, while the Bears (3-11) picked up a 5-2 victory in the second game.
Senior Eric Cos (Coral Gables, Fla.), who appeared in just the second game, batted .667 with two runs and an RBI, while sophomore Dan Lackner (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) drove in three runs.
For Harvard, Sean O'Hara went 3-for-7 with two RBI, while Dillon O'Neill scored twice.
Game 1 - Harvard 3, NYIT 0
The first game of the doubleheader was a true pitchers duel as runs weren't scored until the fifth inning.
Rookie John Duggan (Belle Harbor, N.Y.), who faced his third loss of the season, pitched a solid 5.0 innings. Of the three runs he surrendered, only two were earned. He also struck out two. J.C. Costa (Flushing, N.Y.) did a solid job in relief for NYIT, preventing anymore Crimson runs. He went 2.0 innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.
However, southpaw Brent Suter (1-2) tossed a complete game for the win. He gave up just two runs, walked one and struck out nine.
Game 2 - NYIT 5, Harvard 2
The second game told a completely different story as NYIT jumped on the scoreboard in the second inning and doubled their lead in the third. Senior Dan Lackner drove in two runs with a one-out double to left centerfield to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Seniors George Carroll (Bayside, N.Y.) and Cos were both plated on the hit.
In the third inning, NYIT made it a 4-0 game as Ryan Campbell (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Effrey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) were brought home. Campbell scored on Valdez's double. The designated hitter then crossed home on a base-hit from Cos.
Yet, Harvard continued to fight and ended the potential shutout with two runs in the fifth. O'Neill and Jeff Reynolds scored. However, the Bears remained on top and gave themselves an insurance run in the sixth as Cos scored on a Lackner single up the middle.
Sophomore Tommy Cardona (Bronx, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season (1-2) after 6.0 innings of work. He struck out four. Fellow classmate Robert Loftus (Massapequa, N.Y.) picked up the save, his first of the year. Loftus tossed three shutout innings of relief where he surrendered just three hits.
