Bears Softball Split Doubleheader in Walk Off Fashion

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr.2, 2011) – NYIT softball split Saturday afternoons doubleheader against Mercy. Game one was decided in the bottom of the seventh inning by Junior, Natasha Milosevich (Torrance, Calif.) who hit a walk off RBI single to give the bears an 11-10 victory.

 

Game two was controlled by the Mercy offense in a 10-1 loss.

 

Milosevich lead the Bears offense on the day going 3-for-6 while driving in four runs. Graduate, Marissa Brucculeri (Albertson, N.Y.), went 2-for-4 with two RBI in game one of the doubleheader.

 

For the Mavericks, Kelly Bentson, was 4-for-6 with six RBI on the day. Tayla Gardner pitched a complete game, allowing one run on two hits in her game two win.

 

Game 1 – NYIT 11, MERCY 10

 

Game one of this doubleheader was a back and forth affair. Both teams fought hard to the end but NYIT was able to come away with the win in their final at bat.

 

Mercy struck first, they scored once in each of the first two innings. With the scored 2-0, Mavericks, the Bears came right back in the third. Milosevich drove in two runs to tie the game with an RBI single into right field.

 

The Mavericks would fight right back with four runs of their own in the top of the fourth.  Jenna Ausiello, supplied the big blow with a two-run homerun to make it 6-2, Mercy. The Bears wasted no time answering, sophomore; Lynsey Michaud (Bristol, Conn.) drove in two runs during a four run rally to tie the game up, 6-6.

 

Kelly Bentson, would grab the lead right back for Mercy. Bentson hit a three-run homerun and the Mavericks tacked on one more run to take a 10-6 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

 

NYIT showed no quit, they rallied to scored three runs in the sixth inning to get within one of the lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bears were patient at the plate as they worked three walks in the inning. After Senior, Brigette Kirschmer (Aurora, Colo.) walked with the bases loaded to tie the game, Milosevich came to the plate. She delivered the game winning single down the left field line to give the Bears an 11-10 win.

 

Junior, Jackie Enlund (Rocky Point, N.Y.) threw two innings of solid relief to quiet the Mercy bats to earn the victory on the mound.

 

Game 2 – NYIT 1, MERCY 10

 

Mercy jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in game two, and they never looked back.

 

Tayla Gardner, started on the mound for Mercy and she kept the Bears bats in check all game. Gardner pitched a complete game, allowing one run on two hits to earn the win.

 

Cait Rohme, hit a two RBI double in the second inning to help the Mavericks jump out to a 4-0 lead. Chelsea Methot, added a homerun in the inning as she went on to go 2-for-4 with three RBI in the game.

 

For the Bears, Senior, Martha Redondo (Tucson, Ariz.) hit a solo homerun in the fifth inning to account for their only run.

 

Natasha Milosevich, started on the mound and was roughed up in her three innings of work. She allowed for six runs off of eight hits as she earned the loss.

NYIT will play next on Sunday, Apr. 3 against Dowling at the NYIT Softball Complex.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
