FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr.7, 2011) – Bears softball had another tough day on Thursday. They dropped both games of a doubleheader against Queens College.
Queens (18-10) beat NYIT (4-17) 4-0 in the first game, scoring all four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Knights followed up with a 6-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader.
Senior Brigette Kirschmer (Aurora, Colo.) went 3-for-4 in game two of the doubleheader leading the Bears offense. Junior Natasha Milosevich (Torrance, Calif.) pitched a solid game one, she held the Knights scoreless through five innings before surrounding four runs in the sixth inning.
The Knights were led by Bryttne Santana on the mound. She threw a complete game three hit shutout on her way to earning the win in game one. Caroline Carbone drove in three of the teams four runs in game one.
Game 1 – NYIT 0, QUEENS 4
The first five innings of game one were a pitches duel, each starter put 0’s on the board until the sixth inning.
Milosevich cruised through the Knights line up through five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth. Following three straight singles to load the bases, Caroline Carbone stepped up to the plate and she delivered. She hit a bases clearing triple to drive in three of the four Knights runs in the inning.
Bryttne Santana started on the mound for Queens and threw a gem. Santana threw a complete game three hit shutout to earn her eighth win of the year.
Game 2 – NYIT 2, QUEENS 6
The Knights wasted no time starting where they left off. They jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back on their way to a 6-2 win.
Milosevich, started once again for the Bears, but was roughed up in the first inning for three runs. Junior Jackie Enlund(Rocky Point, N.Y.) came in to relieve her and threw five solid innings. She allowed three runs, only one of which was earned.
Junior Melina Trujillo (Tucson, Ariz.) went 2-for-4 for the Bears and had the lone RBI on the team. Kirschmer chipped in with three hits of her own and Freshman Maura Cien-Mayer (Chula Vista, Calif.) scored both of the team’s runs.
Faith Tessmer threw six innings for the Knights, she allowed two runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in the game. Carla Pennolino led the Knights offense going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

NYIT will play next on Saturday, Apr. 9 against Molloy at the NYIT Softball Complex.First pitch is scheduled for noon.
