OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Mar. 29, 2011) – NYIT softball lost both games in their Tuesday doubleheader against St. Thomas Aquinas. The Spartans (7-9) won the first game by the score 11-2, while the Bears (3-12) struggles continued in their 9-6 game two loss.
Senior Martha Redondo (Tucson, Ariz.) led the Bears offense with three hits and two runs scored on the afternoon. Fellow senior Brigette Kirschmer (Aurora, Colo.) went 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI in game two.
The Spartans were led by Joy Ferriello, who had four hits with six RBI on the day.
Game 1 – St. Thomas Aquinas 11, NYIT 2
Game one was dominated by the Spartans offense as they scored 11 runs on 12 hits.
Junior Natasha Milosevich (Torrance Calif.) started for the Bears and was roughed up for nine earned runs on nine hits in five innings pitched. Ferriello made it a 4-0 game for STAC in the third inning when she hit a double with the bases loaded to drive in all three runners. Junior Melina Trujillo (Tucson, Ariz.) drove in the Bears only two runs in the game with a two out single in the third, but Ferriello would strike again. In the sixth inning she drove in two more runs with an RBI triple.
Megan Sweezy started for the Spartans and kept the Bears bats quiet for the entire game. Sweezy threw a complete game allowing three hits and two runs to earn the win.
Game 2 – St. Thomas Aquinas 9, NYIT 6
The Bears wasted no time getting on the board in game two. Kirschmer and Milosevich each drove in a run in the first inning for an early 3-0 lead. However, the Spartans bats came back to life in the third inning when they scored six runs to make it a 7-4 game. Juniors Michelle Sasso and Devin Meikle each added two RBI in the inning for the Spartans. The Bears would fight back in the sixth inning cutting the lead to one after a two RBI single from Kirschmer, making the score 7-6.
That was as close as the Bears would get as the Spartans added two more in the seventh for a final score 9-6.
Sophomore Megan Power earned her fifth win of the season for STAC. She pitched five innings allowing five runs on seven hits.
