OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2011) - NYIT men's basketball sent its graduate seniors off in style Wednesday night with an 85-70 victory over Mercy in East Coast Conference action. Senior Carl Kindborg (Stockholm, Sweden) posted a game-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead NYIT to a 10-10 ECC record. The Bears also improved to 12-13 on the season.

Sophomore Kayvon Roberts (Corona, N.Y.) added 16 points in the outing, while senior Eric Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) chipped in with10 points. For the Mavericks, Hasan Powell led with 18 points and 10 assists.

As a team, the Bears outshot the Mavericks 49% to 39% from the field, while Mercy held a one rebound advantage, 41-40.

The Bears quickly took control in the first half, claiming an 8-2 lead on points from Roberts, Kindborg, Rodriguez and senior Jerrell Walker (Stockton, Calif.). NYIT then claimed its largest lead of the half, 22-8, on free throws by Kindborg with 12:06 to play. Mercy fought hard to close the gap with baskets from Ed Wilson and Powell, but NYIT continued to dominate. After the Bears saw the half come within seven points, a layup from senior Kris Knez (Astoria, N.Y.) sparked a 7-4 run that brought the half to a close, 43-33.

In the second half, NYIT picked right back up from where it left off with a 13-4 rally that gave the Bears a 17-point edge, 59-42, with 14:40 on the clock. The Bears then claimed their largest lead of the game, 79-55, on a three-pointer from senior Daniel Berg (Osteras, Norway) with 7:04 left. Yet, the Mavericks still had some fight left in them and battled to the very end. Mercy produced a game-closing 7-0 run for the final score, 85-70.
