BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Jan. 21, 2012) – NYIT men’s basketball rallied from as many as 14 points down with 3:49 to play in the first half to battle through an overtime 79-75 win on the road at Bridgeport Saturday afternoon. NYIT improved to 6-10 on the season and 3-4 in league play with the win, while the loss snapped Bridgeport’s (10-7, 5-2 ECC) three-game win streak.
Junior Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) led the Bears balanced attack with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Junior David Naves (Bowie, Md.) added 16 points, while senior Russell Holloway (Budd Lake, N.J.) had 14 points and junior Azel Prather Jr. (Glenarden, Md.) chipped in with 12 points.
After knotting the score 59-59 with 6:06 to play in regulation on back-to-back three-pointers by Naves, the Bears earned a 63-59 edge on a layup from Naves. The four-point lead was the Bears largest of the game. However, the Purple Knights continued to pester and the two teams exchanged baskets until a jumper by Darian David knotted the score 68-68 with 2.7 seconds left.
The game was tied twice more in overtime but a free throw by Scurry gave NYIT the lead for good. Another trey from Naves, a jumper and free throw by Scurry brought the game to a close 79-75.
For the Purple Knights, David led with 25 points.
The Bears return to action when they host the Knights of Queens College in Coaches vs. Cancer action. Tip-off is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. at Recreation Hall.
